Interesting, thank you for the link. This would typically be used in a private network though (rather than a wireless Internet connection as I was referring to), true? This might be a good solution for businesses that have multiple sites and would like to connect them together, without paying monthly for a dedicated link such as point-to-point or MPLS circuit. ESI Communications Servers support a feature called ESI-Link, which is an ideal solution for tying multiple branch offices together via VOIP. Looks like this might be a good option for transporting the VOIP traffic between sites.

My only fear is that, in inclement weather or other poor atmospheric conditions, there might be excessive packet loss on the VOIP traffic (something that would be out of the control of any wireless product, although in theory some techniques could be used to mitigate this issue). Of course, the further apart the two ends are from each other, the more trouble you would have along these lines.

You wrote:

"Satellite modems are NOT acceptable for VoIP traffic, nor are other forms of wireless Internet (such as microwave-based technologies) since they tend to be “bursty”. "

However this is not true for all microwave radios. Check out the new LongHaul by Carlson wireless. A truly synchronous (no jitter) radio with a 6 millisecond latency. It is designed for wireless VoIP and has a range of up to 100 miles. You can learn more at:

I recommend that my clients go with multiple recordings. But don't think it is right for every business. It can depend on the business model. Many people don't realize how useful MOH is and how much it really enhaces the image of their company. Some of my clients use it drive traffic to their website to see more of the specials they have or to stimulate curiousity about that months special deals while they are on the phone with their staff. This of course requires new recordings for the specials. But at the very least don't have silence. Great post and interesting comments.

Rich,

Thank you for your comments. I agree that it would make sense for many businesses to change their on-hold promotions on a regular basis, to keep things fresh or to let their callers know about rotating sales promotions. This would be up to each business to decide based upon how often their sales promotions actually change, the percentage of calls they receive that represent new callers, and the company size and budget. I respectfully disagree with the blanket statement that "A program that does not change becomes ‘noise’ on hold". Any on-hold recording that becomes "noise" on hold probably should have been better thought out in the first place.

If a company does opt to do multiple recordings per year, it is important to note that they are getting something of real value for their money; in other words, they are getting new, changed recordings for the extra money they pay, rather than paying a monthly fee for the privilege of playing the same recording indefinitely. An (imperfect but useful) analogy here would be if I go to the store and have the choice of buying one broom for $10, or three brooms for $25. Either way might make sense depending on my needs, but if I go through brooms regularly, purchasing in bulk would be a good idea. The sort of thing I am cautioning against (and I should perhaps have clarified), would be analogous to getting one broom and paying a monthly fee indefinitely for the privilege of using it.

With respect to loading content on to an ESI system, it is not hard to do and instructions are available to walk the customer through the process step-by-step. With other phone systems that lack built-in music-on-hold capability, it makes sense to purchase external equipment, but on an ESI system, I see no compelling reason for the customer to pay several hundred dollars extra for on-hold equipment that is redundant. Of course, if a customer already has an on-hold unit from a prior phone system that they wish to carry over to their new ESI system, the ESI system can accommodate it.
